The main station of the southern Hessian metropole, Darmstadt, was built in 1912 in late Jugendstil style. Today, the entrance hall is freshly renovated, as is the neighbouring Fürstenbahnhof, now a restaurant. With 35 thousand passengers a day, it is the third largest station in Hessen, behind Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. Darmstadt is an ICE station and an important stop on the German north- south axis for Intercity, Eurocity and inter- regional trains. The underground is linked to the lines Frankfurt/Main - Heidelberg or Mannheim respectively, Wiesbaden/Mainz - Aschaffenburg and Darmstadt - Erbach or Eberbach (Odenwald) respectively.
