Stadtkirche

This church, first mentioned in 1396 as the church of „unserer lieben Frau“ (the Holy Virgin Mary), still holds within its old walls remnants of the original church of 1330. The gothic choir was built in 1430. Earl Georg 1st chose this church, in the meantime known as the City Church, as his ancestral sepulchre. The royal tombs are situated underneath the choir. Look for the 9 metres high alabaster epitaph, which Georg 1st built in 1587 in memory of his first wife, Magdalena zur Lippe.
