The church was built in 1827 by Georg Moller who was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. The church dome, 33 metres in diameter, is supported by 28 Corinthian pillars, each 15 metres high. The church is illuminated by a single window high in the dome. The obelisque before the portal is dedicated to the daughter of the British Queen Victoria, the Archduchess Alice.
