The Residenzschloss (Royal Palace) can be found in the city centre.It is a massive complex of buildings built over six centuries, the most recent addition was made in the 18th century under the auspices of Earl Ernst Ludwig. During the reign of Georg 1st, the palace defended the west flank of Darmstadt. Today the palace is the home of several disciplines of the Technical University of Darmstadt and the University and State Libraries. The bell tower houses the Palace museum, which is well worth a visit to see the Hessian Archdukes' porcelain collection and a Madonna by Hans Holbein.
