The Platanenhain was laid out in 1833 and was embellished in 1914 by a series of sculptures and reliefs by the sculptor Berhard Hoetger. Hoetger, a member of the Künstlerkolonie (artists' colony) wanted to express the essence of Jugendstil in his work, the synthesis of man and nature. The four reliefs in the Platanenhain which reflect life's cycle and the rhythm of nature; Spring, Summer, Sleep and Resurrection. The whole ensemble is completed by a fountain and a sculpture of a mother and child, a variant of his grave monument for the German painter Paula Modersohn- Becker, who died during childbirth.
