After both the original Darmstadt synogogues were destroyed during the 2nd world War, a new synagogue was finally opened in 1988, a ceremony which met with the encouragement of the citizens of Darmstadt. The Jewish architect from Frankfurt, Alfred Jacoby designed it. The stained- glass windows are the work of the English artist, Brian Clarke. The synogogue houses 110 male believers, with 90 seats for women on the empore. Shabbat services are held regularly.
