The Market Square was built in the 14th century as a market and trading place. To this day, a weekly market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday. The fountain was added in 1546 and modified in 1780. The whole market place was restored at the end of the 20th century. The old City Hall can be found on the southern side of the square, opposite the Darmstadt Castle. It was built according to the plans of Mr Wurstmann in 1598. Of all the municipal offices which used to be housed here, only the registry office remains.
