The Luisenplatz is the heart of Darmstadt. All the most important streets and avenues come together here. The whole square is a pedestrian zone and is an important interchange point of many bus and tram lines. It was built by the wife of King Ludwig 1st, the Archduchess Luise Henriette Karoline von Hessen- Darmstadt(1761- 1829) in 1820. A 32 metre high monument for King Ludwig 1st towers in the middle of the square, commonly called the “Langer Ludwig” or “Langer Lui”. A shopping mall, the Luisen- Center, can be found on the south side.
