The Ludwig monument on the Luisenplatz was built in 1844 by Georg Moller in honour of Archduke Ludwig 1st. A spiral staircase leads up through the sandstone pillar to a viewing platform beneath the bronze statue by of the Archduke, a work of Schwanthaler. Ludwig 1st was a great patron of the arts and science and endowed his city with self- government. The pedestal bears the inscription “Ludewig dem Ersten, sein dankbares Volk“, “for Ludwig the First, from his thankful people”. The Ludwig monument is closed during the winter but from April to October you can climb to the platform every first Saturday of the month.
