The Grube Messel (the Messel Pit Fossil Site) was nominated by the UNESCO as a world heritage site in 1995. Its oil shale documents the development of the earth for 57 to 36 million years, in the era after the extinction of the dinosaurs. The Messel pit is one of the richest fossil sites in the world, with more than 10 thousand finds to date of which the diversity of species and their quality is astonishing. Visitors can park close to the pit and walk the 300 metres to a viewing platform from where the pit can be seen. Entrance to the pit is only possible as part of a specially organized tour.
