Romanian-born, German-speaking Herta Mueller has been picked for the 2009 Nobel Prize in literature, the Swedish Acadamy announced 8 October. She was chosen because “with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, [she] depicts the lanscape of the dispossessed”, the Academy said. Mueller was born to a German-speaking family in Nitchidorf , Romania, in 1953 and her work describes the stultifying life in a small village under the Ceaucescu dictatorship.
