The Jazzinstitut in Darmstadt contains Europe's biggest collection of jazz open to the general public. The archive is a treasure chest of literature, records, tapes and images, along with much information about the history and current trends in world- wide jazz. The Jazzinstitut is housed in a baroque hunting lodge, the Bessunger Kavaliershaus, which was built between 1709- 1725. The historical vaulted cellar of this building is the venue for many an intimate jazz concert.
