The Russian Church in Darmstadt is a gem of Russian orthodox architecture, with its rich mosaics, gold- leaved domed towers and colourfully decorated tiling. It was designed in the style of a 16th century Russian church by the Petersburg architect, Louis N. Benois (his real name was Leonty Nicolayewitsch Nebnois) who was incidentally Peter Ustinov's grandfather! The marriage between Czar Nicolas 2nd and the Darmstadt princess Alix von Hessen- Darmstadt took place here. She later became the Czarina Alexandra. Because the Czar and his wife frequently visited Darmstadt, they built this church to celebrate their orthodox service. Russina orthodox church services takes place in this church to this day.
