The Hessian national museum was built by Alfred Messel between 1897 and 1902 for the collections of Grand Duke Ludwig 1st. It now houses a multitude of interesting collections from all areas. Geology, zoology, the history of art, archaeology, sculpture and handicrafts (Jugendstil, enamel and ivory artefacts) stained glass (800- 1980), painting 13th- 19thcentury (including old German altars), modern art, graphic collection (16th- 18th century drawings and prints), a Joseph Beuys collection.
