This building, which used to be a theatre, has been the home of the Hessian State Archive, the City Archive and the Historical Museum since 1994. Regular and numerous exhibitions, concerts and lectures are held here. The architect, Georg Müller, built the “Große Haus” in classical romantic style in 1819. It served as a theatre and with over 2000 seats it was one of the largest theatres of its day. Unfortunately, it suffered extensive damage during the bombing at the end of the 2nd World War. The foyer, however, has been beautifully restored in the authentic style of the 1870's and is well worth a visit.
